THE STING

Later that Friday night, at Six Pack, when the boys were bedded down in the bunkhouse and Dom’s old bones were long asleep, Tony and Steve ventured out into the swamp with a flashlight…and the deer crossing sign. They headed about ¼ mile east, toward the location of Dom’s tree stand.

 

They found a spot about 30 yards from the stand in a thin strand of Christmas tree cypress near a much larger cypress head. There, they stuck the sign in the mud, and carefully chained the back part of the sign to a small cypress tree. They made sure the sign faced Dom’s stand,made sure it was visible from the stand, but at the same time, made sure it wasn’t too prominent. They headed back to camp, chuckling, while kicking out a gator or two.
 

When Tony and Steve got back to the bunkhouse, Dom was awake, and being as competitive as he is, he told them that they didn’t fool him. He knew they were out scouting for deer sign. He said it wasn’t fair because he doesn’t like to walk around in the ‘glades at night.
